Breeding, training and behaviour of the Magyar Vizsla

Please allow us to give you some important information to understand this breed.

The Magyar Vizsla was bred in Hungary as hunt-dog and service-dog.
For this reason we would like to explain some characteristics and behavioural relationships, which are typical of the breed.
Intelligence and learning capability

The Magyar Vizsla has a very marked and fast comprehension capability. The training should begin as soon as possible as a game. Harshness in the education and in the training is useless and not appropriate. Perseverance is the essence of the training.

Already as a puppy, the Vizsla indicates with discretion what can be interesting for him but also very clearly all the things which are new and unknown to him. You should give him time and occasions, to satisfy his curiosity and to be able to learn from it, what in the future will be interesting and important for him and for his owner.
This is also a priori the best possibility to prevent discretion, anxiety or shyness.

The Magyar Vizsla should experience, if possible, all situations, for example city traffic, crowds, travelling with the car, local means of transportation etc.
So his excellent capability of reasoning would be used and increased.

The Magyar Vizsla is not touchy. But he has an excellent memory and can remember extraordinary good and bad experiences for the rest of his life.

A dog-training should be free of pressure, yet successful. The Magyar Vizsla realizes really positively if after the end of a lesson he is abundantly praised or if a playful pause follows.
Fierceness

The Magyar Vizsla has a sufficient wild fierceness and a certain fierceness as regards his capability of protecting.

If you want to train a dog for personal protection, in the Magyar Vizsla you will not find the best dog breed for this goal. His fierceness while hunting or as a protector for home or for the garden is absolutely sufficient.

Also a Magyar Vizsla learns through praise and through punishment. But caution is in order. His marked learning capability allows the owner, through perseverance and the right dose of reproaches, to be soon successful. The Magyar Vizsla is very sociable and happy to learn. Through an unintentional hand-beating he could really become afraid of hands, training and of his trainer.

The Magyar Vizsla has an excellent hearing. So it is possible to train him almost silently, through facial mime and gesticulation. You can reproach him in a low voice to obtain the corresponding reaction.

If you consider the described characteristics of the character it is easy to????e?¯?????? train a Magyar Vizsla successfully and joyfully.

Sensitiveness

The Magyar Vizsla is very sensitive if treated with violence or beaten.
He should not be trained with sharpness; he should have a clear training, with perseverance and comprehension.

Temperament

In addition to his very gentle character the Magyar Vizsla has a lively temperament. He is joyful and very faithful.

As he welcomes you, he needs a physical contact, which sometimes can look a bit intrusive.
Proper allowance must be made for his big need to move and walk, in connection with a big perseverance.

The Magyar Vizsla is very intelligent, curious and willing to learn. He would like to share and participate in everything.
His attitude in the family

The Magyar Vizsla is obedient and with an adequate training and care he follows his trainer unconditionally. If he has enough to do, he is willing to learn and easy to train.

He accepts the family as a "herd". He is friendly also with strangers. But he signals the presence of strangers and blocks possible intrusions energetically. With the family children he shows clear guard and owner instincts.
Also the Magyar Vizsla allows children to beat or torment him.

To develop and mark his valuable qualities, he needs an intensive contact with the herd and with the family in particular during the growing and training phase.

If the Magyar Vizsla is alone in the kennel with too little family connections he cannot develop his qualities.
This can lead to evident problems in the behaviour. Tail tucking, timidity with men, yapping etc.
